What are SHX Fonts in AutoCAD?
SHX fonts are shape-based fonts that AutoCAD uses to display annotations, dimensions and labels. They are lightweight and render fast, which makes them ideal for technical drawings, especially large MEP projects with thousands of text objects.
When you open a DWG file from a consultant or another contractor, AutoCAD often shows a “missing SHX font” warning. This happens when the fonts used in that drawing are not installed on your computer. AutoCAD then substitutes another font, so text looks wrong, overlaps or turns into question marks.
What’s Included in This SHX Font Pack?
This free download includes the SHX fonts most commonly used in MEP, architectural and structural drawings:
- txt.shx
- romans.shx
- simplex.shx
- iso.shx
- arial.shx
- And 100+ more commonly used SHX files
Popular SHX Fonts Explained
txt.shx is AutoCAD’s original default font. It is very basic and blocky, but many older drawings still use it.
romans.shx (Roman Simplex) is the most popular font for engineering drawings. It is clean, easy to read when plotted, and the standard choice in many consultant templates.
simplex.shx looks very similar to romans.shx and is often used for dimensions and general notes.
iso.shx follows ISO drawing standards and is common in drawings from European consultants.
arial.shx is an SHX version of the Arial look. It is useful when a drawing needs to match Arial text but still render fast.
Who Should Use These Fonts?
This SHX font pack is ideal for:
- AutoCAD draftsmen
- MEP engineers and consultants
- Contractors working with submittals and shop drawings
- Students practising with shared DWG files

Still Seeing Missing Font Errors?
If a drawing still asks you to specify a font, it uses a font that is not in this pack. Type FONTALT in the command line, press Enter and set it to simplex.shx. AutoCAD will then use simplex.shx automatically whenever a font is missing, instead of asking you every time.
